The EU manages the fisheries resources and the European fishing fleets through the common fisheries policy (CFP). The CFP relies on scientific advice that builds on reliable and solid data collection: Article 2 and 25 of the CFP outline the objectives and the requirements for data collection in the fisheries sector.

The Data Collection Framework Regulation sets out the basic principles and the general rules on the collection, management and use of data, in line with the CFP. It contains provisions on:

  • the multiannual Union programme and its implementation by Member States,

  • the communication between the Commission and Member States through the national correspondents,

  • the role of regional coordination groups,

  • the storage and sharing of data and

  • the support to scientific advice.

EU Data Collection Framework Denmark

Data collection in Denmark

This website informs the involved institutions, the EU Commission and the public about the  data collection carried out in Denmark according to the EU Data Collection Framework (DCF).   Management of fish stocks in the EU relies on scientific advice, and is therefore dependent on accurate, relevant and up-to-date data.    The data collection comprises of collection of information on catch landings, effort and fleet characteristics, biological data on fish stocks, the economic situation of the fishing fleet and the aquaculture sector, and data on the fish processing industry.   In Denmark, data collection is carried out by DTU Aqua at the Technical University of Denmark, Statistic Denmark, the Department of Food and Resource Economics at University of Copenhagen and the Danish Agricultural and Fisheries Agency. The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries of Denmark is  overall responsible for the programme. 

Funding of data collection activities

Since 2001, the common fisheries policy has set aside funding to help national authorities collect both biological and economic data about all aspects of fisheries management, also including aquaculture and make them publicly available.
